Nada Yoga – Musical Meditation

  • The Hive 205 NW Franklin Ave Bend United States (map)

Nada Yoga – Musical Meditation – is a practice from the South Asian Classical Music tradition. By increasing our sensitivity to pitch, we can achieve a calm mind. This sensitivity is achieved through yogic breathing and meditative focus in which we hold individual pitches for long lengths of time. In this one-hour workshop we spend the first half of class working with Musical Meditation. The second half of the workshop provides students the medium of live sitar performance as a focus for meditation. The purpose of singing in this workshop is to give your mind something to focus on in order to begin clearing your mind of all its static and endless thoughts. We will learn a simple yogic breathing style that helps to support your voice while at the same time relaxing the body and mind. This singing meditation will help prepare your mind to meditate during 20 – 30 minutes of sitar performance (both shorter and longer pieces), which will conclude the workshop.

What is Musical Meditation?

I've been working on the elements of this class for more than a decade. When I started studying sitar with my guru Ustad Usman Khan 18 years ago, he trained me both in individual and group classes to become sensitive to pitch. This sensitivity is achieved through yogic breathing and meditative focus holding individual pitches for long lengths of time. I now lead my sitar students, both individually and in groups, through these exercises.

The purpose of singing in this class is to give your mind something to focus on in order to begin clearing your mind of all its static and endless thoughts. We will learn a yogic breathing style that helps to support your voice while at the same time relaxing the body and mind. This singing meditation will help prepare your mind to meditate during my 20 – 30 minutes of sitar performance (both shorter and longer pieces), which will conclude every class.

What will classes be like?

In this one-hour class we spend the first half of class practicing breathing and singing. The second half of class will be a sitar performance. The sitar performance(s) will allow students a focus for their meditation.

Participants are invited to dress comfortably and bring mats, blankets, blocks, bolsters or other props at allow you to be comfortable for one hour. Participants may sit on the floor, stand, or lay down – whatever is comfortable.

Will I need to sing alone in front of a group?

Definitely not! We will tune ourselves slowly as a group.

What if I have no previous singing experience? What if I sing poorly?

This class is for you! Don't worry, this class will introduce you to tools to improve your singing.
